Change How the World Invests
Tycoon University - the leading online educator for individual investors - is hiring!
We're looking for a strong web designer to help super charge our marketing and product sites.
About The Job
As a web designer at Tycoon University you'll be responsible for a wide range of creative tasks that include:
- Creating new solutions to unique design challenges
- Planning and sketching page wireframes
- Converting those wireframes into mock-ups
- Converting the mock-ups into HTML designs
- Creating stunning email campaigns
- Producing compelling digital and print marketing and packaging materials
- And the list goes on...
We've been in business since 2004 but we still have the same energy as we did when we first started. So if you think you're ready for a unique challenge and can keep up with us, then share your work and your thoughts with us. Emails us at techjobs at tycoonu dot com - include the word "Designer" in the subject line. Tell us why you're the one for us.
We need someone who:
- Understands the basics of user experience design, typography, color and layout - It's not enough to simply know one of these disciplines. As a visual designer at Tycoon, you'll need to know ALL of them. We want designers who can think through a problem and its solutions from end-to-end.
- Has a passion for the web and design in general - We're extremely passionate about what we do here. All of our instructors are former Wall Street brokers, traders, hedge fund managers, etc. We expect the same from our designers as well. We want you to LOVE what you do as we think it'll help you produce more effective designs. So be prepared to tell us about your favorite designers, design books and blogs!
- Is results oriented and metrics driven -- We're always into building something beautiful, but it has to be something that works and helps to accomplish business goals as well. So we're only looking for the mature visual designer who truly understands the delicate balance of user goals and business goals when it comes to designing a page. We also need someone who can check their ego at the door -- we're not into "design for design's sake", we're driven by results and results alone. So we want designers who are familiar with (and worship at the altar of) A/B testing and multi-variate testing.
- Direct Response Marketing Experience is a HUGE Plus - As any designer here will tell you, half your job is to design, the other half is to make sure your designs make money! So we're looking for folks who have experience with short-form email capture pages, sales pages, etc.
- Can communicate with everyone -- As a designer, you inherently need to have strong communication skills. But at Tycoon, they'll need to be exceptionally strong. Not only will you be working with our tech team and our marketing staff, but you'll need to communicate with former Wall Streeters as well. We want someone who's comfortable in any situation and can present a strong case and vision for their work.
- Technical experience is not required but it's certainly a plus - You don't have to know how to code in Ruby or PHP, but we won't knock you for it. We mainly want someone who's familiar with web standards, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.
Is this you? Then share your work and your thoughts with us. Emails us at techjobs at tycoonu dot com - include the word "Designer" in the subject line. Tell us why you're the one for us.
What We're Like to Work With
We like to think we're a pretty fun bunch. We have two offices, one in the heart of the East Village in New York CIty, and our Head Quarters are on Atlantic Avenue in downtown Delray Beach, Florida. Both locations offer ample opportunities for after work dinners and drinks. We're a pretty laid back crew but when it's time to work, we also know how to put our heads down and make things happen - we're looking for people who have a great work ethic and know how to do the same.
Emails us at techjobs at tycoonu dot com - include the word "Designer" in the subject line. Pass along your work and your thoughts on why you'd like to work with us at Tycoon.

- Navia Systems: Lead UX Designer / Front-End Developer
- Wed, 25 Aug 2010 04:09:31 +0000 -
Location: Berkeley, CA
URL: http://www.naviasystems.com
We are looking for a UX designer and front-end developer to design and build the user experience for our probabilistic computing suite.
Our tools and solutions are incredibly powerful and can generate new insights around data and uncertainty that were not available before; this is the first time someone has ever had to understand this kind of output. As Navia’s designer, you will have the opportunity to define how our users experience and visualize these new insights.
You should be as passionate about design as you are about execution. A strong portfolio and a college degree are a must, but so is knowledge and experience with jQuery, CSS3, HTML5, canvas, and the like. Ideally, you have had experience with both data visualization and some exposure to back-end issues like deployment and authentication.
While you will lead all of our design and user experience efforts in the long term, here is a sample of some of the issues we are working on:
- Building a collaborative, interactive development and visualization environment for our probabilistic programming language (think web-based Mathematica’s “notebooks,” with inference continually in the background).
- Showcasing the capabilities of probabilistic systems to prospective customers and users in creative ways.
- Designing the user experience for Veritable, our first product, which lets people see an entirely new class of patterns in their data, which we need to present in an effective and aesthetically pleasant way.
About Navia:
We are venture-backed startup building probabilistic computers, a new class of hardware and software designed to make inferences under uncertainty. Unlike current computers, built for logical deduction and arithmetic precision, our solutions can guess the meaning behind inherently ambiguous data.

- Academia.edu: Academia.edu looking for software engineer
- Thu, 02 Sep 2010 22:38:13 +0000 -
Location: San Francisco, CA
URL: www.academia.edu
About Academia.edu
Academia.edu helps academics follow the latest research in
their field. On Academia.edu, academics follow other academics in their field,
and they get a Twitter/Facebook-style News Feed that contains the latest
research from people in their field on Academia.edu – the latest papers, talks,
status updates, and blog posts.
Vision
Our vision is to dramatically speed up the rate at which
research spreads through the world. We want research to spread around the world
at Twitter/Facebook speed. Currently it takes weeks/months and sometimes more
than a year for a paper to hit the desks of everyone in the world who should
hear about it. Our vision is for all research to be channeled to the people who are interested in it in a matter of hours, rather than weeks or months.
We believe that there is an opportunity to make a big impact
on the rate at which research is shared.
Traction
We recently raised our series A from Spark Ventures, and a
number of angels including Mark Shuttleworth (Ubuntu and Thawte), Rupert
Pennant- Rea (Chairman of The Economist), and Thomas Lehrman (founder of Gerson
Lehrman Group).
Team
We are a team of 6 based in downtown San Francisco (Kearny
and Bush). More info about the team is here:
http://academia/about.
What we are looking
for
We are looking for an exceptional software engineer to join
our team. Academia.edu has a very engineer-driven culture. We describe below
how we think about our culture, and also the qualities of the people we want to
join us.
What professional qualities do we admire?
- Exceptional
engineering: innovation at the cutting edge of web development to
overcome the complex challenges that can arise.
- Obsession
with product and user experience: obsession with creating a great
product, and a great user experience. Feeling anguish and pain when the
site is slow, or when a user interface or feature is bad, and pleasure
when the site is fast and intuitive.
- Problem-solving:
intellectual satisfaction from solving problems. Finding the best and
quickest solution to the problem the team is currently working on.
- Technical
ambition: pushing the boundaries of the technologies we work with. For
example, when thinking about the best UI for a feature, having no fear in
considering creating a new JavaScript framework, if that is what is
required to make it work right.
- Finishing:
finishing products and deploying code. Believing that exceptional
engineering, combined with exceptional creativity, are what makes a
startup succeed.
- Versatility:
comfort with tweaking a CSS style or optimizing a SQL query all in the
same morning
- Ability
to prioritize features: being able to look at a ton of possible
features on a whiteboard, add more to the mix, and then choose which one
has the highest priority
- Being
thoughtful about productivity: thinking about what working
environments and structures ensure optimal productivity. Ensuring that the
right environment and structures are in place for everyone.
- Dedication:
willingness to get up at 4am to restart the servers, and then build
something the next day so the servers don’t go down again
- Personal
investment in what we work on: caring personally about the impact of
our work on people around the world
What personal qualities do we admire?
- Independent
thought: being able to learn from people around us when we need to,
and also challenge them when they need to be challenged
- Being
inquisitive: thinking of ways of improving things that we interact
with
- Creativity:
being able to develop new ideas for the product and enhance the vision of
the company
- Passion
for the Academia.edu vision: passion for building a platform that
could change the way that research is shared and discovered
- Keenness
to have an impact on the world around you: keenness to be the one to
build the platform behind Academia.edu. The possibility of positively
improving the lives of millions of people via what we build is very
exciting for us.
- Being
visionary: thinking ‘What will the world look like in 10 years’ time,
and how can we build that now?
Experience
What is most important, by far, is that you are a quick
learner who can discover and pick up new techniques fast.
- Web
development: you have 2+ years of web development experience
- Full
stack: you have experience designing and implementing the full
stack of a web application: sysadmin, database implementation and optimization,
application development, front-end CSS, HTML and JavaScript.
- Scaling: ideally
you have some experience scaling an application to deal with an increasing
user base. This is not essential though.
Here are some of the technologies that we work with:
You should be comfortable finding the right tools for the
job while becoming great at whatever tool you're using. Experience with Rails
is a plus, but far more important is your ability to pick up new technologies
quickly.
What are we offering?
- The
chance to build an awesome product that could
revolutionize research
- The
chance to work in a fun and intellectually inquisitive team
We also offer some nice benefits! You will get a market
salary and stock options. We want to hire someone exceptional, and we want to
be generous with stock options to make this happen.
In addition, you will also get:
- health
insurance
- any
ergonomic chair of your choosing
- a
laptop with two huge monitors
- a
smartphone (iPhone/BlackBerry/Nexus One)
Where is the job based?
The job is based in San Francisco. We will help with visas
and other issues relating to re-location.
How do I apply?
If you are interested to learn more, please email Richard
Price at richard--at--academia.edu.
To make your application stand out, please sign up to
Academia.edu, and let us know what you think of the site:
- what
is good about the user experience, and what is bad
- what
features we have that you think are good, and which are bad, or which are
missing
If you are not affiliated with a university, you can sign up as an independent
researcher. Please be as detailed as possible in your comments on the site.
